Kim is hosting Tuesday Poetics at dVerse. She has challenged us to write a poem, of any length or form, about an animal in a human way or a human in an animal way, highlighting some trait of the animal/human that either sets us apart or brings us together.

I chanced upon this picture on Google and couldn’t resist admiring the courage of the bird. I was amazed to know that the largest known kill by an eagle was a duiker deer weighing 82lb (37kg), which was 7-8 times the weight of the eagle that killed it!

This formidable bird prompted me to write about it!

Powerful predator in a solitary flight

Leopard of the air” with transcendent sight

Conceited and confident, it flies so high

The herculean strength ordaining “Czar of the skies”

Pursuing quarry with voracious eyes

It spots a deer seven times its size

Determined to prey, it descends from the sky

Oblivious of failure, a cry or a pry

Attacking the innocuous with its strong talons

It pounces and lifts without losing balance

Amazing the world with its courage and dominion

It soars to the blues having attained its mission
